Something evil is loose on the streets of Detroit. Something that was never meant to be there.

This time, it’s not the creature from the indie horror film “It Follows” (read my thoughts on this topic). Released today by Alterna Comics, Issue #1 of “Corktown” reveals a different Motor City scourge, one that (unlike the suburban “It”) wreaks havoc on the inner city. Unbeknownst to the Detroit PD, one of their finest is on the case — in a supernatural way.

“Corktown” #1 introduces the story of a Detroit detective who falls victim to a vampire’s bite. With her soul trapped in limbo and her reanimated corpse wreaking havoc, Torrie must find a way to help her partners stop the carnage before the vampiric monster takes more lives.

Detroit artist Scott Ewen infuses a stark and eerie noir look, bringing Corktown to vivid life. Writer Mario Candelaria fuses a mix of the paranormal with the procedural as he redefines what it means to be both a vampire AND a ghost. Zakk Saam’s lettering connects the two with understated style.

Coverage of this new comic book launch is the first of yet another series of themed-day posts on Loud Green Bird. On “Writer Wednesday,” look for news about and reviews of writers, graphic artists, books, comics, graphic novels — and anything else related to print and digital texts.
